STOPPING THE
 CIVIL CONTINGENCIES BILL:
  YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

DON'T GET MAD, GET EVEN....

Active campaigners from across the political spectrum are determined to stop a draconian Civil Contingencies Bill from becoming law. There is a growing campaign to:

  l

release information to the public

  l

alert peers (and other opinion formers) to necessary amendments

  l

ensure that the media is properly informed..

Please help with our vital lobbying.

  l

Contact a peer   -   although preferably not a Government whip or Minister!
- Baroness Buscombe is the Opposition Spokesman
- Lord Lucas has also tabled some amendments,
- Lord Williamson of Horton is convenor of the independent cross-bench peers.

The Bill's Third Reading in the Lords is scheduled for 16.11.04, with a final review on 18.11.04 (as at 13.11.04) - 'Forthcoming Business' schedules are updated every Wednesday.

Leave phone messages for up to 3 peers.
Use 020-7219 3107 (10:00am-6:00pm) on days when the Lords is in session
Use 020-7219 5353 (at any time, including in a recess); .

The amended Bill will be debated in the Commons on 17.11.04. If your MP is open-minded, write to him/her and asking him/her to speak out in favour of our amendments. If he/she supports the Bill, don't be fobbed off by assurances that there's no scope for abuse, or that just a tweak or two is needed.

If he/she is in an opposition party, ask what he/she is doing to oppose it? You can raise specific points from our 'Q&A' sheet.

Address to write to: House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA or locally (check in your local paper, library or telephone directory).

Look up your MP; some can be emailed

  l

For best results when writing: be persuasive but polite, to the point, and leave out other material that may distract.

  l

Give the press something to feature. Keen letters writers can raise questions for public answer (and embarrassment if deserved). You can also support other letter writers or suggest that a paper covers this vital subject more.

Those with less time or letter-writing experience can just write very brief letters saying - in their own words - that the Bill is draconian and that peers/MPs should support our amendments to it (or, failing which, vote it out!). The volume of letters counts.

Look up your local and other titles in the Newspaper Society database

  l

Spread the word - Political associations? Community groups? Workmates and neighbours? Friends and relatives? Radio phone-ins?

  l

Check our website for updates and new campaign material - it's there to be used.

  l

Last but not least - if you have any great ideas, or need a bit of help, please let us know. And - do keep us posted as to your successes. Best of luck - and thank you!
